THE IDEAL TEMPERATURE FOR EACH POOL

SEP 20, 2021

With the arrival of autumn, the days become shorter and the nights longer and despite enjoying a warm and sunny climate the water temperature in the pool is not comfortable for swimming.

Take advantage of the air temperature to heat your pool and extend the swimming season!

Affordable and easy to install, heat pumps are the ideal solution for heating your pool and using it more often throughout the year, while also saving energy.

Around 80% of the energy used to heat your pool comes from the air!

HOW TO CHOOSE A HEAT PUMP

A heat pump is a thermodynamic device that captures calories from the air and transmits them directly to the pool water. 80% of the energy used to heat the pool comes from the air and only 20% from the power supply, making it the most ecological and economical heating option. To find the heat pump you need among the many possible models, it is important to know your needs well and to take into account important criteria that will make the difference during use.

MAIN FEATURES TO COMPARE:

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

The power, expressed in kW, determines the amount of heat that is transferred to the water. It varies according to three conditions to which the heat pump is exposed during use: the outside air temperature, the hygrometry of the outside air and the pool temperature.

COEFFICIENT OF PERFORMANCE (COP)

The COP or coefficient of performance is the ratio between the power supplied to the water in the pool and the electricity consumption of the heat pump. As an example, a coefficient of performance of 5 means that for 1 kWh consumed at the electricity meter, the heat supplies 5 times more energy to the water in the pool, or 5 kWh.

So the higher the COP, the more efficient and economical the system.

Important: the COP directly depends on temperature (of air and water) and humidity.

To compare the efficiency of heat pumps with each other, it is essential to compare the power supplied and the COP under the same temperature and humidity conditions.

SOUND LEVEL

The sound level varies greatly from one model to another. It is a very important parameter, as a heat pump can operate for 7 to 8 hours a day. It is expressed either in terms of sound power (raw sound level of the emitting source) or in terms of sound pressure (magnitude perceived by the ear, which depends on the distance at which it is measured). Therefore, in order to compare sound pressure, you should check the distance at which it is measured.  In addition, make sure that the sound level indicated is NF-certified, as this is the guarantee of an objective measurement.

NF CERTIFICATION

Choosing a heat pump model with NF certification is a real guarantee of performance, quality and service commitment. Please note that manufacturers offering certification are audited every year. The performances indicated (power output, COP, sound level) and the data specified in the catalogue are measured in a laboratory accredited by the certification body and verified every year.  The NF standard also aims to guarantee impeccable customer service: after-sales service, availability of spare parts for 10 years...

ANALYSIS OF YOUR HEATING NEEDS:

WHAT VOLUME OF WATER DO YOU NEED TO HEAT AND AT WHAT TEMPERATURE?

First selection criteria: the size of your pool. Even if the heat pump has the best technology, you will never be completely satisfied with it if it is smaller than the size you need.

The power supplied by the heat pump must therefore be appropriate for the volume of the pool and its intended use.

WHAT IS THE USE?

Do you want to extend the swimming season in your outdoor pool? Or do you want to heat the water in your indoor pool for swimming in the middle of winter? For pools that are used all year round, the reverse cycle defrost function is essential.  By occasionally recovering heat from the pool water to defrost the evaporator, the heat pump can operate at negative temperatures (down to -12°C for the most efficient models).

WHAT ARE THE INSTALLATION POSSIBILITIES?

Before the purchase, it is also essential to determine where you are going to install the heat pump. You will find more or less compact devices with comparable performance and you can choose between vertical or horizontal models, which will fit more or less well into the space allocated.
